READING & REACTING (FROM GREEN BOOK)

Question 7

Mama disagrees with Mrs. Carter about her brother’s book because she thinks that the book is melodramatic. Moreover, when Mrs. Carter told Mrs. Whitney about the heroine from the book; Zelma killed herself because she is a Negro even though she is almost white, Mrs. Whitney furious about it since her friend’s daughter and her cousin whose have white skin didn’t kill themselves even though they are Negro. This disagreement shows that Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Whitney are stubborn with each other opinion since Mrs. Carter agreed with her brother’s review that even though you are almost-white Negro with the determination but once you are a Negro, you will be a Negro as Mrs. Whitney still disagreeing with the claimed because the author is not even a Negro and he will not understand their lifestyle.

Question 9.

What is Mama's opinion of her daughter at the beginning of the play? How does this view change by the end? In what way is Mrs. Carter responsible for this change?

~Mama’s opinion of her daughter  at the beginning of the play is she support all decisions that Florence had took even if there is a lot of risk faced. Mama really hope that her daughter achieved all their dreams and ambitions to became an actress. Even though they know that is hard to get a job during that time, Mama always gave a chance to Florence to choose her own life . Even when Marge told her that Florence just doing sweeping in the stage, Mama still believe that Florence is in the play. The evidence that I found is in line 27. Mrs Carter responsible for this change because she had expect that the colored people only can do a lower job such as maid.

Question 4
If it were set in the north… The north is better than the south because there’s more liberate than south. There are not so much racist in the north because in the north, lots of occupation depends on the blacks to do it so the whites are a bit open minded about the race.
If it were set today, perhaps black and white will sit next to each other and wait for the train together. It is because nowadays there is no such thing as racism. Black and white can live with each other. They can even marry each other. Racist became a very sensitive issue to be discussed among them nowadays.

Question 5.
Marge alluding that the black woman should know where she belongs and act like a black woman. At that time, black woman are not allowed to sit together with white. They also can’t even dream to stand as high as the white. In the play, Florence ought to realize that she supposed to go home and forget her dream of being an actress.
Mama can’t go to dine no matter how well she dresses up because she is a black. That’s why she has to buy food before get in the train as in the train she would never been able to dine in the train. other 'situation' is when Mama was not allowed to go to the woman's white bathroom although the coloured woman's bathroom is out of order. she has to go to the colored man's bathroom instead. it is stated at line 98 in the play.

Question 6.
Mrs Carter didn’t think herself as a racist and she tried her best to look like one. But deep down , she is racist. She introduced herself as a New Yorker although she came from the south and she also insisted to not call her ’mam’.  This is because she doesn’t want to be seen as racist. But then, when she told Mama about her brother’s book, she started to be racist. She said that a black woman could not work at the same level as the white like in the book, the character named Zelma, should not be a lawyer because she is almost white, not white. The same goes to Florence’s case. Mrs Carter thought that a Negro woman can’t act. They can sing but not act. She suggested that Florence should be a maid which was a more secured work for her as a Negro woman.

Question 10.
The life of Florence herself created the play at the first place. The play is all about her, the Black woman who dares to go out and challenge the discrimination world by herself. Her mother, Mrs Whitney doesn’t have much confidence in her at first but then it makes her think how wonderful Florence is. The absence of Florence and her conversation with Mrs Carter made Mama change her perspective and her thoughts about her daughter, Florence. The play revolves in Florence although she was not in the play.

Reading and Reacting

Question 8
Does Mama’s view of Mrs. Carter change or remain the same as the plot develops ? Why does Mama ask Mrs. Carter to help Florence ? What does she learn that causes her to reject the “help” that Mrs. Carter offers ?

Mama’s view of Mrs. Carter change as the plot develops from more respect to disrespect. Besides , Mama ask Mrs. Carter for help because Mrs Carter has a lot people to contact as she is one of the dramatic actress. This can be one way to help Florence to achieve her dream. Furthermore, at the beginning she thinks that Mrs Carter is a good person that much liberated than most of other Southerner . Mrs Whitney also feels betrayed by Mrs Carter because suddenly she changes her personality to become more racist towards black person. This shows from the line 123 until line 147 when Mrs Carter told her about her brother ‘s book , Lost My Lonely Way. This book is about Zelma who is the heroine, killed herself by jumping from the bridge as she is not white but a black woman. Mrs. Carter also wants to help Florence to be a maid not an actress. This can be seen in the line 229, when she asked Mrs Whitney is it Florence knows how to cook and she also needs to do others house chores too.

REFLECTION

1. What was my role in the designing of the book cover?

My role is giving some ideas in making the book cover and divide the task among our group.

2.Was my opinion taken seriously taken by others?

Of course my opinion was taken seriously by my group members because we accept all the ideas       and respect them no matter whose ideas it was. Then we will choose the best one and present it to the class so that people can evaluate our job. Thus, we can improve our weaknesses and produce a great one next time.

3. What have I learnt from this task?

I've learn quite much during this task actually. The first one is I now know how to make a cover for a book as well as to make it interesting and attractive. There are do's and don'ts in making a book cover. for instance, I've learnt that colours play important role to create a stunning book cover but don't overdo it. it was indeed a good task where I've been able to try something new and I gained more knowledge out of it.

Reflections on Designing the Cover for Florence.

After creating the cover for the play Florence by Alice Childress, you are now required to reflect on the following and put them in your respective blogs:

  • What was my role in the designing of the book cover?
My role is searching for related pictures that we can use for the cover.

  • Was my opinion taken seriously by the others? Why?
Yes. After looking at the book cover that we have been completed, since the rest of the member had their own explanation about the book cover except for me, I gave my opinion regarding the colour of red and blue and the rest of the member accepted my opinion.

  • What have I learnt from this task?
What have I learnt from this task is each thing that you did must be a reason on it. As example, if we put a picture as the book cover, what the reason we put it? Are we put it as a decoration or we do have an explanation about the picture. As I was explaining about the colours of red and blue during our presentation, I knew about what red and blue meanings. Out of the explanations, I chose passion for red and the colour of the sky for blue.

question 1

Yes I’ll be happy to spend my money watching an excellent drama or play. Money are nothing compared to what I will learn by watching the drama. I’ve never been able to watch one before and if I have the opportunity to do so, certainly I will not let that chance go away. I want to see with my own eyes how people can act superbly and enjoy the beauty of art so that when it’s my turn to do drama, I can do an outstanding one.

question 2

I’d be expecting a grand setting, great plot, amazing characters and beautiful costumes from a good play. Because as for me, those things are indeed important to create a successful play. The audience also will be satisfied if the points above are highlighted by the producer.

question 3

For now, I didn’t feel very comfortable to act as I’ve never done a play before. I never thought that someday I will have to act in a play. But, I will try my very best to learn to be good at it. In addition, to get a chance to be someone else could be so much fun.

My though on Drama.

·          Would I be willing to spend my money watching an excellent play / drama? Why?

Yes, I would. It is because it will be easier for me to understand what the story is all about. Moreover, the play will even create the mood and the imagination become real from what had been read on the book.

·         What do I expect from a good play?

I expect a great plot from a good play. Moreover, with a good setting and a great storyline, the play will be even better. In addition, in my opinion, in order to have a good play, these aspects play the important roles. It is because if a play has a remarkable storyline but the setting doesn’t match with it and vice versa, it not worth enough to be praised for eventually. It’s only left the audiences with a sigh of disappointment.

·         Do I feel comfortable to act in a play? Why?

No. I feel myself uncomfortable to act in a play because I’m lost my confidence whenever I have to present myself in front of many people. Therefore, I found myself fond to do anything that doesn’t involve presentation in it. As example, when the lecturers give us the presentation task, mostly, I’m the one that will do the slide show and the other members will present it to the audiences. I think I will do a good job handling the backstage if we have to conduct any play for this semester.

My Thoughts on Drama

Yes , i would spend my money to watch an excellent drama or play because from this drama i can get more new knowledge. Besides that , this semester , in literature we need to learn about drama so , it can be one of my experience about it.

I do expect about a good drama is the actors and actresses must have to do their characters well . If they need to do the scenes a lot of emotional , so they need to make the characters alive. More than that , all the things on the stage must be prepare well.

I do feel comfortable to act in a play because i like to act .I love to take an adventure character. There is a lot of  thing can be happen on the stage so , I need to be ready in physical and mental . Lastly ,  I also have to do a lot of practice before acting on the stage.

  • Do I feel comfortable to act in a play? Why?
~ Yes, I would be willing to spend my money watching an excellent play/drama because I believe that the play/drama will makes me satisfy with their performances.

~ What I expect from a good play is that the actors can makes their characters alive so that the audience can understand the whole story. Besides that, I expect that a good play can be able to manage their props, costume and sound system well. A good play should have a combination of emotional contents, energetic cast who are dynamic and work well with each other, a script that have a good flow.

~ No. I don't feel I like to act in a play because I'm not good in acting and  I don't have any confidence to act in front of many people. I can only work behind the scenes which I believe that I will contribute better.
